Toast Ale - Lemongrass Lager

Toast is a brewery with a mission. "A beer with more taste. A world without waste.". They have been taking surplus bread and using that to replace virgin barley in the brewing process. This means they use less land, water and energy, as well as avoiding carbon emissions. At the time of writing that have saved over 2 million slices of bread, 42 tonnes of CO2 emissions, 252,043 litres of water and reclaimed 171,848 square metres of land. Not only are they doing all of this, but all of their profits go to charity. They have 4 beers in their range and have added to this with 4 collaborations over last year. We're taking a look at their low alcohol Lemongrass Lager.

First things first. The can is a thing of beauty and you really get a sense of the message these guys are trying to get across and their love for the world. It has a light, hazy colour to it - which match quite well to what you might expect from a lemongrass lager. At this stage I should say, it is lemongrass because they have collaborated with teapigs to brew a beer with pure lemongrass tea. Back to the beer. It has a refreshing taste, a lot smoother than you would expect from a lager - more of a pale ale feel to it. There are citrus flavours coming through, from the lemongrass, which a nicely balanced beer.

This beer was brewed for Dry January - so you might not find much of it about any longer, in fact it is no longer available on Toast Ale's website. It is part of their Rise Up Series; Toast Ale bring a challenge to be more mindful in how we consume things and to play our part. There is a QR code on the can, or you can read more about their mission on their website.
